I searched March 2008 for the fair sensation at the Geneva car salon. 100 km electric only, fast charging possible, long distances with gasoline engine, DM = Dual Mode, because 100 km an electric car and at longer distances a hybrid car. I had arrived at the booth of BYD.
The neighbour of BYD was the brand with the star. No electric car, no plug-in hybrid. I brought this disaster of the European car industry in a symbolic photo:

Dramatic change in prognoses

The fossil car industry got starting April with the McKinsey report a tranquilizer: Only 0.75 million electric- and plug-in hybridcars until 2020. I offered McKinsey a bet: 0.75 million electric and plug-in hybridcars will be in 2020 the monthly production in China.
Last week started the German environment minister Sigmar Gabriel to panic. He realized, that the Chinese government follows strictly the top runner policy: Forbid ineligible technology, as soon as there is better technology available. In 500 Chinese towns are gasoline scooters forbidden, because electric scooters are better. As soon as production and infrastructure are suitable, Chinese government will not only ban gasoline scooters, but also gasoline cars.
Probably will be in some years 50 km electric only the minimum for a registration. As Sigmar Gabirel mentioned, so called "new cars" with fossil propulsion will be in China in front of closed doors.
More drastic expressed it Professor Gernot Spiegelberg from Siemens at the SMT conference: More boggle could lead to a situation, that the Asians destroy the European car industry.
How could this look like? Small economy rise, the oil price explodes like prognosed by the IEA to $200. Invasion of Chinese Plug-in hybrid and electric cars. 16 kWh solar electric power is cheaper than 2 litre Diesel. When the first cargo ships arrive, this will be called the D-Day of the European car industry.
